Job 16:1-2 Then Job answered and said, I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

Psalms 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

With friends like Job’s who needs enemies! His friends tried to “comfort” him with worldly philosophies and logic. In the end, they were no comfort at all- of course, they didn’t have the Word of God in the same way we have today. The Psalmist proclaimed that God’s Word was his comfort. What greater comfort could there be than the Word of God?

As we interact with neighbors, coworkers, and family, let’s be sure to use the Word of God as the comfort that quickens (makes alive). Even with our brethren, we can comfort one another with the good news that Jesus is coming soon (1 Thessalonians 4:18). If we try to comfort those around us with the wisdom and logic of this world, we will wind up being like the friends of Job – Miserable Comforters!
